A Fab Lab (Fabrication Laboratory) is a public space offering workshops for individuals in digital fabrication. Equipped with flexible computer controlled tools of differing lengths and materials for the design and realization of objects, with the aim to make “almost anything”.
A main feature of Fab Labs is it’s “openness”. Aimed at entrepreneurs, designers, artists, tinkerers , students … who want to move more quickly from concept phase to prototype, prototype to development or focusing on deployment , etc. They include different populations , age groups and professions. Fab Labs provide a meeting space and enable collaborative creation , producing unique objects : decorative objects, replacement items , prosthetics, orthotics , tools…
The Fab Lab concept was created by Neil Gershenfeld, Professor at MIT in the late 1990’s and launched in the Media Lab of the University , in collaboration with the “Grassroots Invention Group ” and the ” Center for Bits and Atoms ” ( CBA) . To be called a “Fab Lab” , a workshop must respect the Charter of Fab Labs set up by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
